Comprehensive Centers
Program Objectives
This program supports no fewer than 20 comprehensive centers that provide training, professional development, and technical assistance to State educational agencies, local educational agencies, regional educational agencies, and schools to improve educational outcomes for all students, close achievement gaps, and improve the quality of instruction. By statute, the Department is required to establish at least 1 center in each of the 10 geographic regions served by the Department's regional educational laboratories (RELs). Who Can Benefit
Agencies supporting or providing elementary and secondary education will benefit, including State and local educational agencies, regional educational agencies, the Bureau of Indian Education, Indian tribes, community-based organizations, and other recipients of funds under the ESEA.

Award Amounts
The Department held a competition for new awards in FY 2024 and made 5-year awards for 4 content centers, 14 regional centers, and one national center; awards ranged from $1.0 to $6.5 million. In addition, the Department supports a 5-year award for a center that focuses on students at risk of not attaining full literacy skills due to a disability; this center receives $1.5 million per year and was re-competed in FY 2021. Funds also may be used to support contracts to study program implementation and effectiveness.

Program Recipients (FY2024)
Regional Centers provided intensive capacity-building services to help SEAs and other recipients identify, implement, and sustain effective evidence-based practices that improve instruction and student outcomes. The National Center provided universal and targeted capacity-building services to address common high-leverage problems and common programmatic monitoring and audit findings, as well as information on emerging national education issues.
